There is not, and there should not be, affirmative action for elections

Your race and your biological sex aren’t qualifications for elected office, whether you were born a white male or a non-white female (or non-white male).

The identity politicians are apoplectic that white men are the front-runners for the 2020 Democratic Party presidential nomination.

Indeed, most nationwide polls of Democratic presidential preference taken over the past two weeks or so show Joe Biden at No. 1, Bernie Sanders at No. 2 and Pete Buttigieg at No. 3.

Kamala Harris, a two-fer for the identity politicians, had been in third place for a long time before she was bumped (perhaps only temporarily — who knows?) by Buttigieg.

Politico reported a few days ago:

Houston — The women of color who packed into a university auditorium here Wednesday for a first-of-its-kind presidential forum delighted in the rhetoric of candidates who vowed to make Donald Trump a one-term president.

But their frustration was just as palpable — over the heavy media attention being paid to white male candidates in the early days of the Democratic primary, and over polling they contended is feeding a misleading narrative that only a white man can defeat Trump.

“With all due respect to the vice president, he hasn’t even announced yet but he’s the front-runner?” Leah Daughtry, a political operative and former Democratic National Committee official who helped organize the “She the People” event, said of Joe Biden [who would go on to officially announce the next day].

“Racism and sexism are part of the fabric and the fiber and the founding of our country,” she added, “and the way that the [Democratic] candidates are being treated, it just reminds you of that. We’re not past it.” …

Thing is, it seems that the identity politicians’ belief is that we, the people (on the Democratic side, anyway), must support, preferably, a non-white female candidate for president (if it must be a male, he must be non-white).

But electoral politics don’t work that way. The people support and vote for whomever they support and vote for (even when they support and vote for appallingly awful candidates such as George W. Bush and Pussygrabber).

There isn’t, and there cannot be, affirmative action in democratic politics, because democratic politics is all about choice — not about having candidates of certain demographics rammed down the throats of the populace.

I understand the frustration and disappointment over the fact that female and non-white candidates are campaigning but aren’t gaining traction. Kamala Harris as of late can’t make it to even 10 percent in most nationwide polls, and Elizabeth Warren can’t do as well as even Harris, and Cory Booker is behind both Harris and Warren.

Beto O’Rourke is polling right around where Warren is — proof, methinks, that merely being a white man isn’t enough.

Harris, Warren, Booker and O’Rourke all, in my book, lack substance and/or charisma. Harris doesn’t have much of either, Warren has a lot of substance but not a lot of charisma, Booker has neither and ditto for O’Rourke, whose laughably contrived “charisma” isn’t charisma at all, because you can’t fake charisma; you have it or you don’t.

Obviously, because every U.S. president except for Barack Obama has been a white male (and Obama is half-white), within the collective American psyche, apparently, is the belief, if even subconscious, that the president should be a white man. Many, many women even hold this belief, even consciously (most of them are Repugnicans, but still…).

Obama overcame this challenge because of his charisma — and also because, as he acknowledged himself, “I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views.” (Indeed, upon that blank screen I projected — because of his campaign’s relentless, ubiquitous promises of “hope” and “change” — that Obama would be a progressive president. Boy, was I punk’d!)

Obama, an astute political opportunist, struck while the iron was hot; his window of political opportunity was rare and unique and it was brief. For Harris or Booker to believe that she or he easily could replicate Obama’s success simply because of his or her race not only is cynical and shallow and superficial, but quite obviously dead wrong.

I support Bernie Sanders not because he’s an old white guy — I loathe “President” Pussygrabber, but not because he’s an old white guy, but because he’s a fascist, treasonous criminal who wasn’t even actually elected — but I support Bernie because of those candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination in the top three tiers (which I define as consistently polling at 3 percent or more in nationwide polls), he has the most experience in D.C. and is the most progressive, entirely unlike Creepy Uncle Joe, who is an obsolete Clintonian sellout.

I easily could argue that Bernie is the only true Democrat in the race, which is ironic, given how often he is criticized for not actually being a Democrat.

My second choice probably would be Warren, even though her campaigning has been tone deaf and even though it does bother me at least a bit that as recently as the 1990s she was a Repugnican.

The reason I’m not giving Warren money or otherwise actively supporting her is because the polls of those within her own party clearly show that she isn’t exciting them, and I don’t and won’t squander my money, time, energy and emotional investment on a candidate who can’t excite even his or her own base.

My third choice probably would be Buttigieg, but I’m still gun shy from Obama. Even though Obama was an unknown, I put my support behind him, hoping for that change, and I was bitterly disappointed to see that we didn’t get change, but for the most part got only more of the same. Obama was a caretaker president at best.

So I can’t dive in and blindly support Buttigieg, as I did Obama.

Plus, Buttigieg isn’t ready to be president. He’s precocious and ambitious, to be sure, but I don’t think that it’s time to turn over the Oval Office to him. I’d love him to run for governor or for the U.S. Senate — and win (and then do a good job in the office) — first.

And, unlike how the craven identity politicians would support (probably exclusively) only someone who shares their own demographics, I’m not going to support Buttigieg primarily or even solely because he’s a gay white man like I am. It’s not enough that he and I both happen to white, male, and not heterosexual. This isn’t junior fucking high school.

Again, if it’s indeed the case that most American voters believe that the president should or even must be a white man, that’s sad, but, in a democracy, in which the voters are free to elect whomever they wish to elect, whether you or I agree with their choices or not, what, exactly, can be done about that?

That was a rhetorical question, but I’ll answer it anyway: qualified candidates who aren’t male and who aren’t white should continue to run for office, from local office to the presidency. Over time, their candidacies, successful or not, will change the national psyche. I know of no other democratic way.

Finally, it also should be pointed out that Biden and Bernie have run for president before, which is a huge reason that they are at No 1 and No. 2. On the national political stage they are fairly known quantities, unlike the likes of Harris and O’Rourke and Buttigieg. (Sadly, the problem with candidates such as Booker and Warren apparently is that they are known quantities…)

Ironically, at least for now, anyway, it seems to be Buttigieg who is filling the “hope” and “change” spot — that is, he is the bright and shiny newcomer on whom many voters seem willing to take the chance. (It had looked like that spot would be filled be O’Rourke, but he has turned out to be the flash in the pan that it was pretty clear he was going to be.)

And I’m sure that many black Americans, who tend to be homophobic, are pretty incensed that a gay white man apparently has displaced Kamala Harris, who “deserves” the presidential nomination because she’s a black woman, you see; the way that she was born are her “qualifications,” which is ironic, given that we’ve established that merely having been born a white male aren’t qualifications.

What I’m hoping is that young progressive politicians now, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Katie Porter and Rashida Tlaib (and Buttigieg!), get more and more electoral and governance experience under their belts and give us the diverse bench of qualified presidential candidates that we don’t really have now.

That, to me, seems to be the best solution — not to piss and moan ad infinitum that the American people apparently still prefer presidential candidates who are white men.

Whining incessantly about “sexism” and “misogyny” — while ignoring her glaring flaws and shortcomings as a president candidate — didn’t help Billary Clinton the last go-around.

Further such whining isn’t ever going to work in the future.

Donald Trump must never be president

Getty Images

In a shamelessly grotesque display of white nationalism and fear mongering, at the end of his “speech” on immigration in Phoenix on Wednesday, Der Fuhrer Donald Trump paraded white people whose relatives had been killed by “illegals.” This ignores the fact that the vast majority of American citizens who are killed by others are killed by fellow citizens, not by non-citizens. Trump, having no qualifications whatsoever for the highest public office of the land, sociopathically happily will use racial division and scapegoating for his own political gain, no matter how much it harms real people — which makes him quite dangerous.

Yesterday I found the stomach to watch Der Fuhrer Donald Trump’s “speech” on immigration in Phoenix, Arizona, on Wednesday.

It was one of those unpleasant things that you don’t want to do but that you should; fascist demagogue Trump’s public utterances now are as important as fascist demagogue Adolf Hitler’s early public utterances were. (Indeed, just substitute “Jew” for “illegal” in Trump’s public proclamations and you pretty much have Hitler’s political rhetoric: This nation would be great again if only it weren’t for the Jews! illegals!)

Phoenix, of course, was fertile nationalist, fascist, white supremacist ground for El Trumpo, which is why he held his little KKK rally there on Wednesday.

Let’s talk about the backasswards red state of Arizona, which surely would have been a slave state had it not been made a state decades after the Civil War.

While 6.3 percent of those in my home state of California in 2012 were deemed to be undocumented immigrants — the second-highest percentage for any state in the nation (behind No. 1 Nevada at 7.6 percent and tied with Texas also at 6.3 percent) — by comparison 4.6 percent of Arizonans in 2012 were deemed to be undocumented immigrants (the national average 2012 was deemed to be 3.5 percent). Yet to hear the backasswards, Trump-lovin’ Arizonans tell it, illegal immigration is their (and the nation’s) No. 1 problem!

This is not at all the common public sentiment here in California, where we have more “illegals” than does Arizona, both percentage-wise and in actual numbers.

No, the problem isn’t the “illegals.” The problem is right-wing hatred and white supremacism and a fear of diversity rather than an embrace of diversity and an understanding that diversity makes us stronger, not weaker — it’s homogeneity that threatens a nation, not heterogeneity, because homogeneity is just inbreeding writ large.

You see an embrace of diversity and heterogeneity here in California, which is why California is a blue state instead of a backasswards, mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging red state like Arizona.

I feel as safe here in California’s capital as I would almost anywhere else in the nation, but to hear Der Fuhrer Trump tell it, to simply leave your home is to be at grave risk for being murdered by an “illegal.” If Trump’s fear-mongering rhetoric were true, then why am I not a lot more terrified than I am? After all, I live in the state with more “illegals” than any other state!

At the end of his “speech” on immigration on Wednesday, Trump fittingly had a bunch of all or mostly white people come on stage and talk about their loved ones who were killed by “illegals.”

Which is, of course, statistically bullshit.

Given that there are millions of undocumented immigrants in the United States, yes, of course, a tiny percentage of them are going to commit serious crimes, including murder. But far more American citizens are killed by (and otherwise violently victimized by) fellow citizens than they are by non-citizens; should we deport all American citizens? If you are an American citizen residing in the United States, you are, after all, much more likely to be murdered or otherwise killed by a fellow citizen than by a non-citizen.

Trump’s “speech” on immigration in Phoenix on Wednesday was a hate fest; it was an orgy of white supremacism.

Donald Fucking Trump has had more than a fucking year to come up with something other than fascistically blaming all of the nation’s problems on the “illegals” (most of them from Mexico) and advocating that we build a “Game of Thrones”-like Great Wall on the southern border to keep out the brown-skinned wildlings who supposedly threaten our very (white) way of life.

Trump has had plenty of time to develop some semblance of an actual presidential campaign, but he still has nothing other than rank white supremacism.

Trump on Wednesday night in Phoenix shamelessly and disingenuously yet again brought up the unfortunate shooting death of 32-year-old American citizen Kathryn Steinle by an undocumented immigrant from Mexico in early July 2015 in San Francisco, because the shooting conveniently happened so soon after he opened his presidential campaign by demonizing “illegals.”

Steinle’s death was to be retroactive “proof” that El Trumpo was right about those “dangerous” “illegals,” you see*; she didn’t die in vain! She died for the Trump campaign!

Thing is, the authorities suspect that the “illegal,” a homeless man, shot Steinle (with a loaded handgun that he had found) by accident, not on purpose (the man’s case has not been adjudicated yet), and at least one member of Steinle’s family, Steinle’s brother, has had a real problem with Trump using Steinle’s death for his own personal and political gain. (“If you’re going to use somebody’s name and you’re going to sensationalize the death of a beautiful young lady, maybe you should call and talk to the family first and see what their views are,” Steinle’s brother said.)

Trump’s hate- and lie-filled anti-immigrant rhetoric, of course, is only meant as a diversion from the fact that he is utterly unqualified to be president of the United States of America. He never has been elected to any public office yet seeks the nation’s highest elected office. No ego there! Donald Trump only ever has been a flim-flam man, a walking, talking fraud and fraudster.

Trump doesn’t want the masses to focus on him and on his stunning lack of qualifications; he wants to distract and terrify the ignorant, racist masses with the bogeymen that he has created.

And Trump wildly overstates the bogeymen’s numbers, of course.

From 2009 to 2012, the numbers of undocumented immigrants (about 11.2 million of them) in the United States didn’t grow at all — in fact, the number of them peaked at 12.2 million in 2007, before the George W. Bush-induced recession, and their numbers have fallen because of the second George Bush recession — and ironically, their numbers in the border states of California, New Mexico and yes, Arizona, dropped from 2009 to 2012. (That fact didn’t stop Arizona’s racist, hateful SB 1070 in 2010. Facts, you see, never stop the fascists. [SB 1070 was an incredibly mean-spirited anti-brown-skinned-undocumented-immigrant law that for the most part has been stricken down as unconstitutional by the federal courts.])

Blaming a certain group of people for the nation’s problems isn’t going to solve the nation’s problems any more than Nazi Germany’s blaming the Jews for its problems solved Germany’s problems.

And, of course, the fascists, the nationalists, the white supremacists are bullies, so they’re not going to pick on someone with power — someone with numbers and with political power. No, they’re going to go after a relatively much weaker minority. That’s how Nazis and neo-Nazis operate, because they’re weak, stupid fucking cowards.

Ironically, I rather doubt that Der Fuhrer Trump actually personally hates Latinos. (Of course “illegals” overwhelmingly refers to brown-skinned individuals from south of the border.) Latinos (“illegal” and “legal”) are just an awfully politically convenient punching bag (or should I say piñata?). Demonizing undocumented immigrants from Latin America (and, I believe, by extension, all immigrants from Latin America) is Trump’s way to try to get into the White House. (Hey, it’s just politics! It’s nothing personal! We’re good — right?)

The thing is, Der Fuhrer Donald Trump’s hate-filled, racist rhetoric harms actual human beings. Not only “illegals” are targeted, but all Latinos (and even those who aren’t even actually Latino but who might to some appear to be Latino) are to be targeted by Trump’s white-supremacist and white-nationalist flying monkeys, and that’s unfuckingacceptable.

It’s as acceptable as was Hitler’s and his henchmen’s targeting of Jews (and other relatively powerless minority groups).

History has demonstrated amply that the demonization of an entire group of people by a nation’s political leaders easily can lead not just to persecution, but even to genocide against that group of people.

Donald Trump must never be president of the United States of America.

If he does make it that far and his political rhetoric turns into the Nazi-like actual persecution of a certain group or certain groups of people (he has demonized Muslims, too, but primarily has targeted Latinos), then it would be time for something like, as the right wing likes to put it, a Second-Amendment remedy.

It’s a remedy — an extreme one, yes, of course, but an extremely necessary one — that should have been employed with Hitler; it would have saved millions of innocent lives.

We true Americans patriots must never allow the United States of America to become Nazi Germany 2.0.

We can allow that to happen only over our dead bodies.

I far prefer ballots to bullets, but as the right wing never rules out the use of bullets, neither can we on the left afford to do so.

P.S. As a white American-born U.S. citizen who has lived in California and, unfortunately, also in Arizona my entire life, I can testify that a solid majority of the Latinos whom I’ve known and with whom I have interacted have been decent, hard-working people.

I’m not at all a fan of Catholicism (or any other organized religion), that’s true, but overall Latinos have brought the United States far more benefit than harm. Their presence and their injection of their culture, which includes their strong work ethic, into the national culture of the United States of America makes the U.S.A. stronger, not weaker.

I, for one, won’t sit idly by while a President Trump fascistically persecutes Latinos because I’m not Latino.

P.P.S. I don’t feel like regurgitating all of the details of Trump’s despicable “speech” in Phoenix on Wednesday; it was bad enough to watch it all the way through once. You should watch it yourself. If you’re sane, you’ll note many incredibly pathetic moments. It’s great insight into the “man’s” “character.”

You’ll note, I think, that the vast majority of his fascist shtick very apparently isn’t even anything that he strongly believes himself, but that he knows works well with his audience of white nationalists and fascists.

I will note that among Trump’s many wonderful ideas regarding immigration is requiring an ideological test of prospective immigrants to be let into the nation, as though (1) such a test weren’t a violation of human rights (your political ideology must match that of a typical Repugnican Tea Party fascist to be able to come into the United States!) and (2) as though such a test, if actually implemented, couldn’t be defeated.

*As a writer for even the right-wing Wall Street Journal commented:

High-profile incidents, like the [July 2015] arrest of a Mexican national in the horrific shooting death of a young woman in San Francisco, can give the impression that immigrants are more likely to commit violent crimes [than are natives]. But the alleged killer [of Kathryn Steinle] is no more representative of Mexican immigrants than Dylann [Storm] Roof [the winner who gunned down nine black Americans in their church in cold blood in Charleston, South Carolina, in June 2015] is representative of white people.

Bill would make LGBT individuals visible in California public schools

The California state Legislature has passed a bill that requires the state’s public schools to teach about the contributions that non-heterosexuals and non-gender-conforming Americans have made to the nation — and the wingnuts, predictably, are agog.

Funny, though, how it’s perfectly OK for the Repugnican-Tea-Party-majority members of the Texas Board of Education to dictate that state’s public school curricula — among many other things, the Texas board last year voted to replace all references to “capitalism” with “free-enterprise system” (since capitalism, in which the rich grow richer and the poor grow poorer, is growing more and more unpopular these days) and to rewrite history to reflect that the alcoholic, self-aggrandizing witch hunter Joseph McCarthy wasn’t such a bad guy after all — but it’s “socialist” “tyranny” or the like (indeed, the McCarthy-loving Ann Cunter would call it downright “demonic”) for the Democratic majority in the California Legislature to dictate California’s public school curricula.

It’s only “brainwashing” when the Democrats do it, you see.

One Repugnican Tea Party California Assemblyman said of the pro-LGBT education legislation, “As a Christian, I am deeply offended” that the “homosexual agenda” would be taught in the state’s public schools.

As a non-Christian, I am offended that the so-called “Christians” — the “Christo”fascists — believe that it’s appropriate for our public schools to be conducted like “Christian” schools. What if the Muslims or the Jews wanted Islam or Judaism pushed in our public schools? How would the so-called “Christians” like that?

And the “homosexual agenda”? First of all, we don’t call ourselves “homosexuals” — only the homo-haters call us “homosexuals” — and secondly, our agenda is that of equal human and civil rights. (The “homosexual agenda” to the right-wing fascists, I do believe, is that we “homosexuals” have the goal of “making” everyone homosexual. [Of course, the actual heterosexual agenda is to “make” everyone heterosexual, but I digress…])

Gay Democratic California Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco stated of the pro-LGBT education legislation, “I don’t want to be invisible in a textbook,” echoing the words of a (wise) Latina Texas Board of Education member who reportedly last year stormed out of a board meeting after the white-majority board refused to include more Latinos in the curricula, even though Texas is second only to California in the number of Latinos who live there: “They can just pretend this is a white America and Hispanics don’t exist.”

The Democratic view of public education is that public education should reflect our nation’s diversity. Our children, after all, need to be taught how their world is, not how some wingnutty ideologues believe the world should be.

On that note, the Repugnican Tea Party view of public education is that public education should perpetuate, as long as is possible, the unjust, oppressive domination of the entire nation by the minority of those who are right wing, white, (presumably) heterosexual and gender-conforming, and “Christian.”

Determining what should and what should not be taught in our public schools inherently is a politically charged process, but if I had children, I sure the hell wouldn’t cripple them, possibly for life, by sending them to schools that don’t teach how the world is, but that teach how some ignorant and bigoted, white supremacist, patriarchal and misogynist, heterosexist “Christo”fascists — who, thankfully, are a dying breed — would like the world to be.

I hope that California’s Democratic governor, Jerry Brown, signs the bill to require that the contributions of us non-heterosexual and non-gender-conforming Americans are taught in our public schools. It’s the right thing to do.

P.S. For more context, this is from The Associated Press:

California law already requires [public] schools to teach about women, African Americans, Mexican Americans, entrepreneurs, Asian Americans, European Americans, American Indians and labor. The Legislature over the years also has prescribed specific lessons about the Irish potato famine and the Holocaust, among other topics.

SB48 [the LGBT education bill] would require, as soon as the 2013-2014 school year, the California Board of Education and local school districts to adopt textbooks and other teaching materials that cover the contributions and roles of sexual minorities.

The legislation leaves it to local school boards to decide how to implement the requirement. It does not specify a grade level for the instruction to begin.

So all that the LGBT education legislation does is add LGBT individuals to a curricula of diversity that already is mandated by state law.

I love living in California, where diversity is honored, not shit and pissed upon.

The predictable political deaths of Palin and Steele

Orlando Sentinel photo

Michael Steele and Sarah Palin embrace at a rally in Orlando, Florida, in October.

Repugnican National Committee chair Michael Steele, the RNC’s first black chair, has dropped out of the race to lead the RNC for the next two years, and we’ll never see a President Palin. (Sarah’s chances before this week weren’t good anyway, but her incredibly narcissistic and sociopathic response to the massacre in Tucson on Saturday sealed her fate.)

But it’s not like either Palin or Steele really had the love of the Repugnican Party anyway.

Repugnican John McCainosaurus chose Palin as his running mate after Barack Obama rather than Billary Clinton had emerged as the 2008 Democratic presidential candidate. The choice of Palin was, in large part, a cynical ploy to convince the nation’s women that the Repugnican Party, not the Democratic Party, is the true party of feminism — never mind that Palin sets women back by several decades.

The Repugnican Party, you see, believed (perhaps still believes) that women are stupid.

And shortly after Obama took office in January 2009, the RNC, in a cynical ploy to convince the nation that the Repugnican Party is just as friendly to blacks as is the Democratic Party, put Michael Steele, whose highest post had been lieutenant governor of Maryland, in charge of the show. (That the best that the RNC could do was the former lieutenant governor of a tiny state shows how many high-ranking blacks within the party the RNC had to choose from.)

Two years later, Steele got the boot, and a white man (surprise surprise) probably will be his replacement.

True, Steele, as the majority of Repugnicans are, is a bumbling idiot, but another factor in his ouster, I believe, is that his skin color didn’t magically make the Repugnican Tea Party any more attractive to those outside of the white supremacist set.

And Sarah, Sarah, Sarah.

Palin was not, I surmise, supposed to try to go beyond being John McCainosaurus’ running mate, but, as she put it herself, she “went rogue” and made herself the fascistic face of the Repugnican Tea Party. Palin was supposed to have been just a prop, but she very apparently had ambitions of her own. (With emphasis there on “had.”)

Had the “tea party” element of the Repugnican Party been more successful on Election Day in November (significant “tea party” losses included Joe Miller’s, Sharron Angle’s and Christine O’Donnell’s for the U.S. Senate), the Repugnican Party might have been willing to tolerate Palin for a while longer, but the “tea party” is sputtering out, and this past week proved that Palin is becoming much more of a liability than an asset for the traditional GOP.

And now, the true face of the Repugnican Party has re-emerged in the white-male faces of the likes of Speaker of the House John “Cry Me a River” Boehner, Darrell “Joseph McCarthy Jr.” Issa and Reince Priebus, the Repugnican Party chair of Wisconsin, who probably will succeed Steele (and who apparently is meant to cynically appeal to the youthful vote, since previous appeals to the women’s vote and the non-white vote didn’t work out so well…).

And not a single female or non-white face is among those who are considered to be serious contenders for the 2012 Repugnican Tea Party presidential nomination. (Indeed, stupid white male presidential wannabe Mitt Romney already is jet-setting around the globe like some sort of shadow president, which I find to be rather treasonous, at least in spirit if not in the letter of the law.)

Sarah Palin and Michael Steele were lame attempts to con the country into believing that the Repugnican Party is diverse.

But the country didn’t buy the con job, and now that they no longer are needed, the Repugnican Party has relegated Steele and Palin to the dustbin of history.

P.S. Moments after I posted this, the breaking news came that Reince Priebus has been named the new head of the RNC.

So here is the new face of the Repugnican Party:

Priebus attends a debate among five candidates ...

Ethnic cleansing continues in Arizona

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer will assimilate you.

So I’m thinking of Repugnican Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer as something like the Borg Queen, telling Arizonans: “You will be assimilated! Resistance is futile!”

I mean: WTF?

Arizona is out-Texasing Texas.

This from The Associated Press:

Phoenix – Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed a bill targeting a school district’s ethnic studies program on Tuesday, hours after a report by United Nations human rights experts condemned the measure.

State schools chief Tom Horne, who has pushed the measure for years, said a Tucson school district program promotes “ethnic chauvinism” and racial resentment toward whites while segregating students by race.

“It’s just like the old South, and it’s long past time that we prohibited it,” Horne said.

The measure prohibits classes that advocate ethnic solidarity, that are designed primarily for students of a particular race or that promote resentment toward a certain ethnic group. It also prohibits classes that promote the overthrow of the U.S. government. [Um, any such class exists anywhere?]

The Tucson Unified School District program offers specialized courses in African-American, Mexican-American and Native-American studies that focus on history and literature and include information about the influence of a particular ethnic group.

For example, in the Mexican-American Studies program, an American history course explores the role of Hispanics in the Vietnam War, and a literature course emphasizes Latino authors.

Horne said he believes the Mexican-American studies program teaches Latino students that they are oppressed by white people. Public schools should not be encouraging students to resent a particular race, he said.

Brewer’s signature on the bill comes less than a month after she signed the nation’s toughest crackdown on illegal immigration — a move that ignited international backlash amid charges the measure would encourage racial profiling of Hispanics.

A Republican running for attorney general, Horne has been trying to restrict the program ever since he learned that Hispanic civil rights activist Dolores Huerta in 2006 told students that “Republicans hate Latinos.”

District officials said the program doesn’t promote resentment, and they believe it would comply with the new law.

About 1,500 students at six high schools in the district are enrolled in the program. Elementary and middle school students also are exposed to the ethnic studies curriculum. The district is 56 percent Hispanic, with nearly 31,000 Latino students.

Sean Arce, director of the district’s Mexican-American Studies program, said last month that students perform better in school if they see in the curriculum people who look like them.

“It’s a highly engaging program that we have, and it’s unfortunate that the state Legislature would go so far as to censor these classes,” he said.

Six UN human rights experts released a statement earlier Tuesday expressing concern about the measure. All people have the right to learn about their own cultural and linguistic heritage, they said….

Jesus Fucking Christ.

White culture is taught every fucking day in the public schools, but for any other culture to be taught is equated with an attempt to overthrow the fucking government –– and, incredibly, perversely and insanely ironically and hypocritically, even to how whitey traditionally has treated others in the South.

This latest new law signed by Arizona’s Borg Queen is white supremacism and white paranoia and the continued suppression of minorities by whites in Arizona — plain and simple.

And I should know whitey, because I’m white myself.

And boy, is whitey stupid. A law passed by terrified whites trying to disempower non-whites is, I believe, only going to empower these non-whites even more in the long run; when they feel that they are under attack from the whites (because they are), they’re only going to have more solidarity and even more resentment toward whites, not less, yet the genius authors of the law claim that they’re trying to prevent the resentment of whites by non-whites.

Arizona not only violates the civil rights of non-whites by deeming the teaching of their culture to be akin to attempted governmental overthrow, but Arizona cripples its students by refusing to teach them about a diverse world in which more and more is going global.

All students benefit by learning about other cultures and not just about the Borg — er, the white — culture.

Until and unless the insane white supremacists no longer run Arizona’s state government, there’s no way in hell I’m setting foot in Arizona again unless a close family member of mine who lives there should die.

I am ashamed that I was born and raised in the un-American state of Arizona, and I consider California — where diversity is cherished and, because it is cherished, taught — to be my home state.

Whitey fights the inevitable coming of the Brave New World of the ‘fifth race’

A sign in protest of immigration bill SB1070 ...

A sign, photographed at the state Capitol in Phoenix today, urges a boycott of Arizona in light of Arizona’s white Repugnican governor having signed a law that enables mostly white law enforcement officers to make those who appear to possibly be illegal immigrants prove their citizenship status. I support a boycott of the God-forsaken red state of Arizona, where I unfortunately was born and lived for the first three decades of my life. Below are photos of Arizona’s white Repugnican governor, Jan Brewer (who was not elected but who took over Democrat Janet Napolitano’s term when Napolitano was named the secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security), surrounded by mostly white law enforcement officials, at a press conference surrounding her signing of Arizona’s new draconian, racist, white supremacist law yesterday in Phoenix. (Memo to the blue-eyed devil Brewer: Your attempt to look like Britney Fucking Spears at your age is way beyond pathetic. Please, for the love of God, stop.)

Just yesterday I was discussing with a right-wing co-worker of mine how United States history has been so whitewashed (emphasis on “white-“). The right wing, which busily has been rewriting U.S. history for some time now, presents U.S. history as the valiant trumph of the white man over the difficult terrain of the “New World.”

Much less emphasized or even left out altogether in this “history,” I told my co-worker, are the facts that the white empire in what is now the United States of America was built upon land stolen from the natives, whom the white people decimated, and upon labor on the stolen land performed by people abducted from their native lands and enslaved (and by their progeny, who were born into this slavery).

Oh, that is just the history of the world, my co-worker dismissed the white man’s evils on this continent; throughout history, peoples have conquered other peoples, and thus lands have changed hands. That’s just the way the cookie crumbles and that’s just how the ball bounces.

Funny, though, that the wingnuts don’t use that same oft-used right-wing excuse for the evils of U.S. history to take a more universal look at how the racial demographics of the United States are changing now.

When justifying and dismissing the wrongs that white people have committed, that’s just the way the world works, the wingnuts argue, but they can’t handle the fact that the face of the United States of America is becoming less and less white.

Backasswards Arizona’s* new law, which makes it a crime to breathe while brown, is a textbook example of how whitey is terrified of “the other” and is a case in point of how this irrational, racist/white supremacist fear is coming to a head.

It is racism and it is white supremacism.

I’m white. My parents are white. I was raised white. I know whitey.

So when whitey claims that whitey isn’t being racist, I know when that’s bullshit.

If Mexicans (and others from Latin America) didn’t speak Spanish (or, as “President” George W. Bush at least once called their language, “Mexican”) but spoke English, and if they looked Anglo, there would be no problem with them crossing the border.

It is the fact that they are different from whitey that is the problem. They don’t call them “aliens” for nothing; they might as well be aliens from outer fucking space.

Fact is, far more of my fellow whiteys than Latinos have fucked me over in my lifetime, and I’m just fine with a Latino “takeover” of the United States of America.

Latinos are (in no certain order) nicer. Humbler. Less materialistic. More artistic. More grounded. More generous (even though they usually have much less to give than does whitey). More spiritual.

Latinos are incredibly hard-working, and so it’s incredibly fucking ironic that the same white baby-boomers and senior citizens, who sooner rather than later will need underpaid and overworked Latinos to take care of them when their obese, bloated bodies relegate them to their motorized scooters and oversized hospital beds, should attack their future caregivers. Stupid.

At least the Latino takeover of the United States of America (or much of it, anyway) has been gradual and nonviolent. The Latinos are supplanting whitey more slowly and much more bloodlessly than whitey supplanted the natives of what now is the United States. I can’t say that whitey karmically deserves to have been let off the hook as easily as whitey thus far has.

I, for one white, look foward to the Brave New World, the Brave New World in which there are fewer and fewer white faces because the races are mixing it up.

For the most part, I agree with the late Mexican philosopher José Vasconcelos’ essay “La Raza Cósmica” (“The Cosmic Race”), in which he advances the idea of a “fifth race” in the Americas, a race that is comprised of mixed-race peoples; this “fifth race” contains the best of all of the races.**

Racism is bullshit. We’re all members of the species Homo sapiens, just as all cats are members of the species Felis domesticus and all dogs are members of the species Canis domesticus.  To state that one race of human is better or worse than another is to assert an opinion, a preference, not a fact. If you state that German shepherds are better than poodles, that is recognized as only an opinion, a preference, as both are dogs, yet racists buy into the myth that one race of human being can be superior or inferior to another.

Every human being is my fellow human being — yes, even the white wingnuts whom I don’t claim as my own, the white wingnuts who, in their ignorance and their evil, ironically make me prefer peoples of other races. (Yes, the white supremacists have a name for white people like me: “race traitors.”)

Even biology (I know, the wingnuts hate science) dictates that genes that remain isolated make for a genetically and biologically weaker group of individuals. (This genetic weakness sure would explain the fucktarded white supremacists who show up at “tea party” events with their grossly misspelled signs.) Mixing the genes of individuals from different populations, however, allows for provincial genetic disadvantages to get washed out, and thus is for the benefit of the species.

I am one “race traitor” who is doing his best to help usher in the Brave New World of the “fifth race.”

I voted for the mixed-race Barack Obama (and any problems that I have had with him have had nothing to do with his race). I don’t tolerate racist hate speech to be spoken in my presence, but call the racists on their racism. Tomorrow I again will attend Sacramento’s annual Festival de la Familia, the annual fair that celebrates Latino culture. And I am thinking of brushing up on my Spanish, which I learned years ago and which should come in handy as the Brave New World continues to arrive in my lifetime.

And that is what the white disphits in Arizona and the other red states should be doing: preparing for the future, instead of fighting the inevitable. They can be part of the march of human history, or they can be relegated to the dustbin of human history (where they probably belong anyway).

*I lived in Arizona the first 30 years of my life before I moved to California in 1998. Although the majority of my relatives still live in the God-forsaken red state of Arizona, I have yet to step foot back there since I left there, and probably the only thing that ever will take me back there is a funeral. About the only good thing that I can say about Arizona is that it isn’t Texas, although as of late Arizona seems to be catching up to Texas.

I heard one television commentator recently call Arizona “diverse.” No, it isn’t. It’s mostly only two races, white and Latino, with some Native Americans, most of whom are sequestered on reservations, and only a light sprinkling of those of African and Asian descent. California is diverse, a United Nations, and California’s history as once having been part of Mexico is still evident in the names of its largest cities, such as Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Sacramento, its capital.

**Many of Vasconcelos’ assertions on the characteristics of the different races would be considered politically incorrect today, but “La Raza Cósmica” needs to be read within the context of the fact that it was published in the 1920s.

Institutional child abuse in Texas

Diana Gomez, left, and Garrett Mize, along with other University ...

Associated Press photo

A Latina student protests before a State Board of Education meeting in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday. According to The Associated Press, “A group of 40 students marched to the public hearing to ask ‘the far-right, conservative faction of the state board to not inject their political agenda into the social studies and history curriculum.'”

Anyone who has read me recently knows that I have a fairly broad definition of the term “child abuse.” Anything done (or not done that should be done) that harms a child, not only physically or sexually, but also psychologically, emotionally and spiritually, is, in my book, child abuse.

Unfortunately, here in the United States of America, we have a literal, narrow definition of child abuse. Americans quickly jump upon news accounts of child molesters, for instance, rabidly calling for everything from castration to execution for the perpetrators.

Yet everyday child abuse that relatively few Americans blink an eye at harms far more children than do child molesters, and this everyday child abuse untroubles these vigilant self-proclaimed protectors of children’s welfare.

Take, for instance, Texas. (No, really — please take Texas!)

The Associated Press reports today:

Austin, Texas – A far-right faction of the Texas State Board of Education succeeded [today] in injecting conservative ideals into social studies, history and economics lessons that will be taught to millions of students for the next decade.

Teachers in Texas will be required to cover the Judeo-Christian influences of the nation’s founding fathers, but not highlight the philosophical rationale for the separation of church and state. Curriculum standards also will describe the U.S. government as a “constitutional republic,” rather than “democratic,” and students will be required to study the decline in value of the U.S. dollar, including the abandonment of the gold standard.

“We have been about conservatism versus liberalism,” said Democrat Mavis Knight of Dallas, explaining her vote against the standards. “We have manipulated strands to insert what we want it to be in the document, regardless as to whether or not it’s appropriate.”

Following three days of impassioned and acrimonious debate, the board gave preliminary approval to the new standards with a 10-5 party line vote. A final vote is expected in May, after a public comment period that could produce additional amendments and arguments.

Decisions by the board — made up of lawyers, a dentist and a weekly newspaper publisher among others — can affect textbook content nationwide because Texas is one of publishers’ biggest clients.

Ultraconservatives wielded their power over hundreds of subjects this week, introducing and rejecting amendments on everything from the civil rights movement to global politics. Hostilities flared and prompted a walkout Thursday by one of the board’s most prominent Democrats, Mary Helen Berlanga of Corpus Christi, who accused her colleagues of “whitewashing” curriculum standards.

By late Thursday night, three other Democrats seemed to sense their futility and left, leaving Republicans to easily push through amendments heralding “American exceptionalism” and the U.S. free enterprise system, suggesting it thrives best absent excessive government intervention.

“Some board members themselves acknowledged this morning that the process for revising curriculum standards in Texas is seriously broken, with politics and personal agendas dominating just about every decision,” said Kathy Miller, president of the Texas Freedom Network, which advocates for religious freedom.

Republican Terri Leo, a member of the powerful Christian conservative voting bloc, called the standards “world class” and “exceptional.”

Board members argued about the classification of historic periods (still B.C. and A.D., rather than B.C.E. and C.E.); whether students should be required to explain the origins of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its impact on global politics (they will); and whether former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir should be required learning (she will).

In addition to learning the Bill of Rights, the board specified a reference to the Second Amendment right to bear arms in a section about citizenship in a U.S. government class.

Conservatives beat back multiple attempts to include hip-hop as an example of a significant cultural movement.

Numerous attempts to add the names or references to important Hispanics throughout history also were denied, inducing one amendment that would specify that Tejanos died at the Alamo alongside Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. Another amendment deleted a requirement that sociology students “explain how institutional racism is evident in American society.”

Democrats did score a victory by deleting a portion of an amendment by Republican Don McLeroy suggesting that the civil rights movement led to “unrealistic expectations for equal outcomes.” …

So the public education that a child receives in Texas, apparently, is good only as long as that child never crosses the borders of the state of Texas. And it helps immensely too, of course, if that child is white and is born to parents who identify as Christian and conservative.

The purpose of education is to prepare an individual to be able to function in the world — not to be able to function only in the backasswards state of Texas.

Stupid old white Texans are making themselves feel better by cramming their dying worldview down the throats of today’s youth, but by trying only to ensure the continuation of their own woefully outdated ignorance, they are doing Texas’ youth a huge disservice.

Texas’ youth will not be competitive in a world of increasing diversity and enlightenment — a world that does indeed recognize the problem of institutional racism even if it does not yet recognize the problem of institutional child abuse, such as what is happening to the public educational system in Texas.

Control of education in the United States of America always has been local. “States’ rights!” is the mantra. Yet “states’ rights” was used to justify slavery and post-slavery racial segregation and racial discrimination.

Of course the logal troglodytes want local control of education and of everything else, such as workers’ rights, consumers’ rights and the rights of individuals under the criminal “justice” system. They want to be able to force their ignorant, fearful and hate-based worldview on all of those within their domain — with impunity.

It’s long past time to federalize public education. American children deserve better than to be left to the ignorance, bigotry, hatred and fear of the racist/white supremacist, misogynist, patriarchal, homophobic, xenophobic, “Christo”fascist, jingoistic assholes who sit on school boards across the nation.

No wonder China and India and other Asian nations are kicking America’s ass. Their children are actually being educated — and not indoctrinated in wingnuttery.
