Incredibly hypocritically proclaiming that “we need to restore the norms of the Senate” – even though the Repugnican Tea Party traitors’ wholly partisan (and probably also racist) refusal to allow former President Barack Obama to nominate a U.S. Supreme Court justice with more than 11 months of his second term still remaining was a stunning break with “the norms of the Senate” and U.S. history and U.S. democracy – Senate Majority “Leader” Yertle McConnell announced today that the Repugnican Tea Party traitors are doing away with the filibuster and the 60-vote requirement where the Senate confirmation of Supreme Court justices is concerned.
That is, the Repugnican Tea Party traitors are so fucking weak and desperate that they’ve changed the historic rules in order to get their one guy in. If you’re in a strong political position, you don’t need to cheat.
The partisan, even treasonous, murder of the filibuster for Supreme Court justices easily could be good news for those of us who oppose the Repugnican Tea Party traitors. It’s quite possible that “President” Pussygrabber will get to put only one wingnut on the nation’s highest court, and then his Democratic successor, who should be elected in November 2020, could put two or even three (maybe four?) justices on the court – with a simple majority vote of Democratic senators.
What goes around tends to come around.
In the meantime, history will record that Neil Gorsuch is an illegitimate Supreme Court justice. He got there only because first the Repugnican Tea Party cravenly simply refused to allow Barack Obama, who had almost a full year of his second term left, to even nominate a replacement for the repugnant wingnut “Justice” Antonin Scalia, who finally kicked off on February 13, 2016, and then cravenly changed the rules of the Senate in order to be able to get him in with fewer than 60 votes. (What a shock – the rules of the game yet once again were changed by privileged, right-wing white men for the benefit of yet another privileged, right-wing white man.)
Today, we progressives shouldn’t mourn a “loss,” but instead should look at the long game. We need to ensure that the next president and the next Senate are Democratic, and then we’ll play by the new rules that the Repugnican Tea Party traitors have established.
Seriously – I vehemently oppose any return to the Senate “norms.” And all of us must. There can’t be two sets of rules and standards, one for the Repugnican Tea Party traitors and one for the rest of us.
The filibuster for Supreme Court justices should remain dead and buried, not resurrected by a future Democratic Senate. And yes, when the Democrats next have control of the Senate and the president is a Repugnican, they should simply deny that president the right to make a nomination to any vacancy on the Supreme Court. (They should make the identical “argument” that Yertle McConnell made: that the people should decide the next Supreme Court justice — at the next presidential election.)
As long as the Democrats stand their ground – and we, the people, must make them – the ghosts of the filibuster and of allowing a sitting president with plenty of time left in office to make a nomination to the Supreme Court will haunt the Repugnican Tea Party traitors when the tables inevitably are turned.
