Nutmeg lies about her poll numbers

PollMemo_new

The gubernatorial campaign of Repugnican Nutmeg Whitman put out these bogus poll numbers in an e-mail to the campaign’s supporters today, showing how much contempt Team Nutmeg has for its own supporters. (Graphic copied and pasted from the actual e-mail from the Megalomaniac Whitman campaign.)

Nutmeg Whitman is a fucking liar.

Reputable polling organizations recently have put her Democratic challenger Jerry Brown anywhere from 8 percent (a Public Policy Institute of California [PPIC] poll) to 13 percent (a Los Angeles Times/USC poll) ahead of her, with yet another recent poll (a Field Poll released yesterday) putting Brown at 10 percent ahead of Nutmeg.

It’s safe to say that Brown’s lead is in the high single digits to low double digits, yet Team Whitman sent out an e-mail today (yes, I’m on the enemy’s e-mail list) that states:

In a survey conducted by Hill Research Consultants among 604 likely voters on October 26th and 27th, the race for governor is tied 43% Whitman to 43% Brown…. In a separate McLaughlin & Associates survey conducted among 900 likely voters on October 25th, 26th and 27th (300 each night), Meg Whitman has a slight lead over Jerry Brown 44% to 43%…. This neck and neck race represents a marked improvement for Meg Whitman….

Hill Research Consultants? McLaughlin & Associates?

OK, if these poll numbers are accurate, how come no poll that wasn’t purchased by billionaire bitch Nutmeg shows a “neck and neck” gubernatorial race? Why do only the Team Nutmeg polls shows this to be the case?

Megalomaniac Whitman wanted better poll numbers and so she simply bought them.

She and her henchpeople apparently didn’t want their supporters to become dispirited and perhaps not vote, so they decided to just lie about how well Megalomaniac actually is faring against her opponent.

With such blatant fabrications now, one must wonder what Queen Nutmeg would do were she actually to gain major political office.

But Nutmeg Whitman will find out on Tuesday that, despite her billions, the governorship of California cannot be bought.

Practice saying “California Governor Jerry Brown.”

Queen Nutmeg: Off with their heads!

Associated Press photo

Repugnican California gubernatorial candidate Nutmeg Whitman, who more and more reminds me of the Red Queen, is poised to lose to Democrat Jerry Brown on November 2 by anywhere from eight to 13 points

An increasingly desperate Nutmeg Whitman, trailing California’s next governor, Jerry Brown, in the polls from the high single digits to low double digits, more and more looks like Tim Burton’s Red Queen.

Queen Nutmeg now promises that she’ll make support of the death penalty a “litmus test” for any judges whom she would appoint as governor.

It’s pretty safe, when you’re a billionaire bitch whose legion of lawyers can get your own filthy rich ass out of anything, to ensure that those of lower socioeconomic status get executed.

And I love how the majority of wingnuts claim to be Christians yet support the death penalty.

Whom would Jesus execute? Especially given the fact that he was a victim of the death penalty himself?

California has plenty of problems, and one of them isn’t that we don’t execute enough individuals who could, instead of being executed, be incarcerated for life so that they can never kill again, if we want to talk about public safety. And if we want to talk about California’s budget crisis, the legal process associated with executing someone costs more than it does to keep him or her incarcerated for life.

Jerry Brown is not, as Team Nutmeg has alleged, “soft on crime.”

Jerry Brown has more reverence for human life than does Team Nutmeg, which is shamelessly exploiting the blood lust of the lowest common denominator of the electorate in a last-ditch effort for votes that more than $140 million of Nutmeg’s own money have failed to buy.

If Megalomaniac Whitman had her way, she’d rule from a castle encircled by a moat filled with severed heads, a la the Red Queen.

Get Queen Nutmeg a nice warm pig for her tired feet — and don’t dare touch her tarts or otherwise piss her off, or she’ll have your head.

P.S. This just might be the Best. California. Political. Ad. Ever.

Impeach the scumbag for perjury

Clarence Thomas, Virginia Thomas

Associated Press photo

Above: Right-wing U.S. Supreme Court “Justice” Clarence Thomas is shown pictured with his wife, Virginia, in 2007. Below: Anita Hill is sworn in before the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. Senate in October 1991. She testified to the committee that Thomas had sexually harassed her on the job, and consequently she was attacked by the right wing as a liar for the left wing. But now, a second woman, Clarence Thomas’ former girlfriend, has come forward to say that Thomas was a serial sexual harasser.

I always believed Anita Hill.

Anita Hill testified, way back in 1991, during his confirmation hearings before the U.S. Senate, that now-U.S. Supreme Court “Justice” Clarence Thomas, who was nominated by George Bush I, was guilty of having committed sexual harassment while on the job.

Hill was villified by the right, and then-right-wing gun-for-hire David Brock even penned a book about her titled The Real Anita Hill — a book that he later admitted was “character assassination” for his right-wing pimps. (Brock now works for the left.)

Now, Thomas’ former girlfriend, 65-year-old Lillian McEwen, says of Thomas’ on-the-job behavior: “He was always actively watching the women he worked with to see if they could be potential partners. It was a hobby of his.”

McEwen also now says that Thomas “was obsessed with porn. He would talk about what he had seen in magazines and films, if there was something worth noting.”

“In her Senate testimony, Hill, who worked with Thomas at two federal agencies, said that Thomas would make sexual comments to her at work, including references to scenes in hard-core pornographic films,” reports the Washington Post, which also notes that during his confirmation hearings before the U.S. Senate, Thomas said in his “defense”: “If I used that kind of grotesque language with one person, it would seem to me that there would be traces of it throughout the employees who worked closely with me, or the other individuals who heard bits and pieces of it or various levels of it.”

The “logic” there is that if only one person thus far has come forward to report wrongdoing, then that wrongdoing must not have taken place.

Well, now we have two women who have reported the same sexually harassing behavior of Clarence Thomas. Lillian McEwen also told the Washington Post: “The Clarence [Thomas] I know was certainly capable not only of doing the things that Anita Hill said he did, but it would be totally consistent with the way he lived his personal life then.”

Are we to call both of the women liars, as the right wing called the women who had accused Repugnican California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of having sexually harassed them (before he became governor) liars?

That Thomas’ pathetic wife, Viriginia Thomas, recently incredibly inappropriately called Anita Hill (who now is a professor at Brandeis University) essentially to tell Hill to apologize for having “lied” about her piece-of-shit husband’s sexual harassment*– and was incredibly stupid enough to leave her intimidation on Hill’s voicemail  — only underscores the fact that Thomas is guilty as charged of sexual harassment.

Clarence Thomas should be impeached — if not for the sexual harassment itself, then for the fucking perjury, the lying while under oath, that he committed during his confirmation hearings before the U.S. Senate’s Judiciary Committee.

Clarence Thomas must be in some deep shit, or his wife, apparently fearing that her privileged lifestyle is threatened, wouldn’t have made her (perhaps drunken?) phone call to Anita Hill.

And it’s interesting to watch the Repugnican Tea Party claim to be the party that really cares about women and women’s rights and women’s welfare when not only does the Repugnican Tea Party believe that women don’t have the right to determine what goes on inside of their own uteri, but tries to sweep the sexual harassment of women by powerful right-wing men under the red carpet.

*“I just want to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband,” is what Virginia Thomas left on Anita Hill’s voicemail, according to The Los Angeles Times.

“I have no intention of apologizing because I testified truthfully about my experience and I stand by that testimony,” Hill stated in response to Mrs. Thomas’ incredibly inappropriate voicemail message.

Give me socialism or give me death!

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The right wing’s witch hunts during the Cold War and the McCarthy Era involved Communists and homosexuals. Must! Root! Out! The! Enemy!

Today, it’s “socialism!” instead of “Communism!” that the right wing bandies about, and we non-heterosexuals (along with immigrants from Latin America and Muslims and other historically less powerful minorities) remain scapegoats for all of the nation’s ills.

It’s interesting that for all of the wingnuts’ blather about “freedom,” serious discussion of alternative economic systems is so fucking taboo. Here in the United States of America, land of the free only to support capitalism, socialism isn’t an economic system; it’s an epithet meant to shut down any actual serious discussion of socialism.

It’s a pretty powerful way for the capitalistic plutocrats to maintain control, to make the masses think that any other way of doing things isn’t even possible.

If capitalism were so strong and so self-evidently the only feasible economic system, then why does the right wing do its best to stifle any serious discussion about alternative economic systems by branding those of us who wish to have such a discussion as traitors? Um, yeah.

Of course, it’s the millionaires and billionaires, like Rupert Murdoch and his little bitch boy Glenn Beck, who keep stoking the pro-capitalistic propagandistic fires, since Hey, capitalism sure has been good to them! (to the rest of us, um, not so much…).

Capitalism has, in the minds of millions of American sheeple, been equated with patriotism and Christianity — and all kinds of other things, such as militarism, and yes, colonialism (um, why wouldn’t Barack Obama or any other at least semi-sane and moral individual oppose colonialism, Dinesh Dikshit, since colonialism by definition is about the exploitation of the weaker by the more powerful, you fucking moron?).

The right wing, of course, for all of its talk about “looking forward, not backward,” equates socialism and (little-“c”) communism with tyranny and the like, as though we humankind are doomed only to repeat the mistakes of the past, as though we cannot create something new.

Democratic socialism could work quite well in the United States of America, and, if the nation survives the right wing’s attempt to destroy it in an Armageddon that it creates only through its wish for such an Armageddon, probably democratic socialism — which is about what’s best for the most number of individuals (in contrast to how capitalism is about what’s best for only a small number of individuals, at the expense of the majority) — is the only thing that’s going to save the nation.

This news story from the French (socialist!) news organization AFP, though, highlights the propagandistic obstacles created by the plutocratic propagandists that we Americans who want a better future and a better present for ourselves and those who follow us have to overcome:

New Castle, Delaware — Stephen Knotts, a blond, blue-eyed member of the conservative Tea Party movement, is deeply concerned about where he sees the United States heading.

“We are pushing towards European values. Socialism, that’s a European value,” he warns. “Everybody’s kind of zombified over there.” [Gee, has he even been “over there,” I wonder?]

Knotts is one of a crowd gathered at a Delaware shooting club, awaiting an address by Senate candidate and Tea Party superstar Christine O’Donnell.

He is one of many Americans who fear their country is lurching dangerously towards higher taxes and bigger government and cites with fear the experience of France and Germany.

“Sixty percent of what they earn goes for taxes,” he tells a reporter, though the actual figure is closer to 40 percent.

Paul Lamanna, a member of the shooting club who describes himself as a first generation Italian immigrant, is similarly concerned about what he sees as a turn towards European policies in the United States.

“They have communism, they have fascism, they have socialism, even today. I’m not interested in any of that. I’m interested in democracy,” he says.

In neighboring Newark, Delaware, 31-year-old Kevin Thomas pronounces himself “sick and tired of this big government coming in, taking our money, giving it away basically to people who don’t deserve it.”

“We’re building a nation of slackers,” he warns at a campaign event for O’Donnell….

Wow. So the millionaires and billionaires who get bailouts from those of us who actually pay our fair share of taxes aren’t “slackers” — it’s only the working class and the poor who are the “slackers.” Which is exactly what Uncle Rupert wants you to believe, and which is exactly what his legions of Faux “News” viewers parrot dutifully. (Trust Uncle Rupie! He has only your best interests in mind!)

Only the rich deserve even more, you see, while the have-nots deserve even less — because they’re lazy slackers. (It absolutely is not that they are exploited in a ruthless corporatocracy that dipshits like the “blond, blue-eyed member[s] of the conservative Tea Party movement” in the story above stupidly call “democracy.” [“Blond, blue-eyed member[s] of the conservative Tea Party movement” — hmmm… Reminds me of another fascistic movement comprised mostly of the blond and blue-eyed…])

“Everybody’s kind of zombified over there [in Europe],” the blond and blue-eyed “tea-party” dipshit remarks in the news story above, very apparently oblivious to the zombification of millions of Americans by the right-wing noise machine funded by the millionaires and billionaires like something right out of “The Matrix.”

The way that we non-heterosexuals have to get equal human and civil rights is to stand up to the bullies and to counter the propaganda and lies that the wingnuts pump out there. It’s a long, tough slog, but we’re no fucking slackers, and we are winning the war against bigotry and ignorance and hatred.

And the only way that we, the millions of us Americans who are the have-nots and are the living-from-paycheck-to-paycheck and are the just-an-illness-away-from-poverty are going to get a better future and a better present for ourselves is to counter the plutocrats’ blatant fucking self-serving lies that we are the lazy “slackers.”

It’s called projection — the rich are the slackers. And we don’t need them. They need us.

It’s a popular uprising that the rich fear the most, which is why they keep a steady stream of pro-capitalist propaganda flowing to keep the “patriotic” sheeple zombified. (And it’s also why they live behind their gates with their private security.)

You gotta hand it to them, though: The plutocratic propagandists are quite successful — I mean, millions of Americans tolerate, even praise, an economic system that clearly works only for those relative few at the top. Millions of Americans stupidly incorrectly believe that this system of institutionalized exploitation — capitalism is nothing but legalized thievery — one day is going to make them rich, too. (This I call the “lottery mentality.”) Millions of Americans stupidly would defend, to the death, the very same economic system that is killing them slowly.

This slow death these dipshits call “freedom.” (George Orwell put it best when he invented Big Brother’s slogans of “War is peace; freedom is slavery; ignorance is strength.” This is the credo of the Repugnican Tea Party.)

That the filthy-rich powers that be have demonized socialism to the extent that they have demonstrates that it is a clear and present danger to them. If they want you to reject it, there must be something about it that’s quite good for you.

Only when the majority of us Americans demand democratic socialism — instead of continuing to acquiesce to the pro-plutocratic, pro-corporatocratic, duopolistic partisan charade that we call “democracy” that is incapable of delivering anything even close to hope or change, since it is designed only to perpetuate the status quo of perpetual hopelessness for the majority — will we overthrow our capitalist overlords who call us the lazy slackers while they continue to steal from us.

We Americans, quite to the contrary of the claims of the “tea-party” dipshits in the news story above, could learn quite a lot from the Europeans, perhaps especially from the French, who fucking fight for better conditions for themselves.

Reports The (capitalist) Associated Press today:

Paris – A nationwide strike by major French unions canceled flights and trains and shut the Eiffel Tower [today], disrupting daily life for many and putting new pressure on the government to drop a plan to raise the retirement age by two years.

Unionized train and Paris public transport workers vowed to stay off the job for at least another day, and police said at least 1.2 million people marched in protests against the plan, the largest turnout in four nationwide demonstrations over the last five weeks.

That could be a signal of rising momentum for the movement facing off against President Nicolas Sarkozy’s governing conservatives over its proposal to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62.

The government has refused to back down, saying the plan is the only way to save the money-draining pension system. Some unions upped the ante by declaring open-ended strikes starting [today], meaning walkouts could drag on for days or even weeks.

The outlook for Wednesday was still uncertain in many sectors, but many workers at the national railways planned to stay off the job, as did some employees of the Paris transport network. Some oil workers pledged to keep up a protest at refineries, and one union warned of looming gasoline shortages.

[Today] hundreds of tourists visiting the Eiffel Tower were ushered away after workers there voted to join the strike.

“The closure of the monument is a symbol,” said Yann Leloir, a striking employee. The tower — France’s most-visited monument — is to reopen [tomorrow] as usual….

This is why the American right wing, led by the millionaires and billionaires, bashes labor unions: because labor unions can accomplish something for the common working citizen. Labor unions can make the playing field more level.

Yet millions of Americans — working Americans — have been brainwashed by the filthy rich into believing that unions are bad for them. No — unions are bad only for the rich.

Change in the United States of America will come. The capitalist center cannot hold. It will not hold.

The only question is whether the revolution for what is right and what is fair and what is just — an end to the exploitation of the masses by the few — will be a bloody one or whether the rich will save their own necks from a repeat of the French revolution here at home.

Otherwise, those torches and pitchforks, methinks, are going to materialize sooner than most would ever guess.

Glenn Beck is NOT just like you (and other observations on the sorry state of the marketplace of ideas)

Wingnut kingpin Glenn Beck, who, despite the cover of his upcoming book (uh, does he actually write any of his books?), is worth tens of millions of dollars, wants you to believe that he’s just like you.

I like to check amazon.com’s top-100-selling books periodically to see how the marketplace of ideas is looking.

Unfortunately, it usually looks like the actual marketplace is looking.

I’m always dismayed to see the number of wingnut titles that make the top 100, and I wonder whether wingnuts really read these books or whether they just get a high from buying them.

At No. 18 on amazon.com as I type this sentence, for instance, is Dinesh Dikshit’s The Roots of Obama’s Rage. On the cover is a stern-looking Barack Obama lacking only horns and a Hitler ’stache. Obama is shaded red to show his rage:

Except that I can’t recall ever seeing Obama enraged. He always plays it as coolly as a cucumber. How would we even know that Obama is angry?

Indeed, Obama apparently has learned to avoid, at all costs, looking like an “angry” black man to the point that he shows about as much emotion as does a Vulcan. (White men, especially rich ones, are allowed to be angry, but a black man, even one living in the White House, isn’t; an angry black man is just violent, out of control, deranged, savage, animalistic, etc., you see.)

The Roots of Obama’s Rage is published by Regnery Press, which publishes only wingnutty dogshit, and on its page on amazon.com, Dikshit’s book is endorsed by Newt Gingrich, who reportedly finds it “stunning.”

I find it stunning, too — stunning that blatant crap like this actually sells.

But probably even worse that Dikshit’s shit is Glenn Beck’s upcoming load of horsecrap titled Broke.

Glenn is on the cover looking broke.

Poor guy.

He feels your pain.

Really.

Except that Wikipedia notes of Beck’s income:

In June 2009, estimators at Forbes calculated Beck’s earnings over the previous 12 months at $23 million, with 2009–2010 revenues on track to be higher. Although the majority of his revenue results from his radio show and books, his website’s 5 million unique visitors per month also provides at least $3 million annually, while his salary at Fox News is estimated at $2 million per year.

Additionally, Beck’s online magazine Fusion sells an array of Beck-themed merchandise, while his website offers a web subscription service called “Insider Extreme” where for $75 a year one gets access to behind-the-scenes footage and a fourth hour of his daily radio show. In April 2010, Forbes calculated Beck’s earnings for the previous year (March 2009 – March 2010) to be $32 million.

They say that money can’t buy happiness, but we should ask Glenn Beck how happy he feels.

Beck’s millions come from Joe-the-Plumber-like dipshits who believe that Beck is one of them. And that they, too, can become a millionaire. Except, of course, that 99.9-repeating percent of them never will. But they’ll buy Beck’s book on how to get rich — which will only make Beck richer.

And I’m sure that Beck’s book, which right now is only at #184 on amazon.com but surely will climb higher in the coming weeks, advises you to buy gold. (Wikipedia also notes of Beck’s income: “Goldline International also sponsors Beck’s radio show and was the exclusive sponsor of Beck’s 2009 comedy tour; their sponsorship has brought Beck criticism.”)

Then there’s The Coming Economic Armageddon: What Bible Prophecy Warns About the New Global Economy, now at No. 69 on amazon.com (because you’d trust a faith healer over a smarty-pants surgeon, right? So fuck those egg-headed economists!), and Crimes Against Liberty: An Indictment of President Barack Obama, which is yet another Obama-hating book (right now at No. 89) with the premise that it’s downright fucking TYRANNY!!! if your stupid white male candidate loses the election but isn’t given the office anyway, as was the case with George W. Bush.

Speaking of the devil, not be outdone, George W. Bush has a book coming out next month, just in time for Christmas:

Called Decision Points, and already at No. 37 on amazon.com’s top 100 right now, I’m guessing from its title that it’s not a coloring book, as I’d have expected from Bush, but that it’s a connect-the-dots book.

But seriously, what don’t we already know about George W. “Decider in Chief” Bush and his Big Decisions?

We know that he decided to steal the 2000 presidential election with the help of his brother (then-Florida Guv Jeb), then-Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris, the wingnuts on the U.S. Supreme Court and some others, and that he decided to launch his illegal, immoral, unjust and unprovoked Vietraq War against the wishes of the United Nations Security Council and against world opinion for the war profits of Dick Cheney’s Halliburton and the other oily war-profiteering subsidiaries of BushCheneyCorp.

And that he decided to ignore the August 2001 presidential daily briefing titled “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.” and the August 2005 presidential daily briefing titled “Hurricane Katrina Determined to Strike in U.S.”

There: I just summed up the Bush II presidency for you. Save yourself some money and buy something that will make you smarter, not dumber, such as the latest by Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, actual economist Robert Reich or even Jon Stewart, whose comedy at least is intelligent.

Because ultimately, dipshittery is treason.

Nutmeg Whitman is NOT a whore

Meg Whitman

Associated Press photo

Whores, you see, have to work for their money. And they don’t have that much money, because most of their money goes to their pimps.

Repugnican billionaire Nutmeg Whitman has pumped more than $119 million of her own money into trying to buy California’s governor’s seat. And how did she become a billionaire? By having been a corporate pimp — by profiting filthily from the labor of underpaid corporate prostitutes and from corporate johns (that is, overcharged consumers).

If we don’t mean that Megalomaniac Whitman is a whore literally, well, then, how could a woman who is that unattractive really be a slut?

No, it’s just not accurate to call Nutmeg Whitman a whore. A bitch, yes. A whore, no.

But, if you are a member of Team Nutmeg, and the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Sacramento Bee all have endorsed your Democratic opponent, Jerry Brown, and you still are reeling from Maidgate, then yeah, you try to make a big fucking deal about the fact that some Brown campaign underling was caught on tape calling Nutmeg Whitman a “whore.”

For the feminazis out there who go apoplectic over the use of the word “whore” (or “bitch” or “cunt” or the like), the words “prick” and “dick” to describe a male asshole aren’t considered to be sexist, so why is “whore” or “bitch” considered sexist? “Whore” or “bitch” (or even “cunt”) is just an epithet for a woman you don’t like. The use of such an epithet against a certain woman usually means that you don’t like that particular woman — not that you hate all women.

And for the Repugnicans to try to play the sexism card, when virtually all female Repugnican politicians and political candidates oppose a woman’s right to choose what she may and may not do with her own uterus, is beyond insanely hypocritical.

In any event, I’m not worried whatsofuckingever about someone calling Nutmeg Whitman a “whore.”

I’m worried about what would happen to the great state of California were that billionaire bitch actually to succeed in getting her greedy grubbies on the wheel of the ship of state.

And if you are a fellow Californian, you should be, too.

‘It gets better’? How about ‘You are fabulous!’?

The recent rash of suicides by young men who had been taunted for being gay (or otherwise non-heterosexual) has taken me a bit by surprise.

First, while growing up in the backasswards red state of Arizona I always was keenly aware of homophobic sentiment all around me (and I still am aware of homophobia, although I encounter it much less often as an adult in the blue state of California), but never did I feel wrong or defective or dirty or sinful or any of the other negative, toxic things that the “Christo”fascists wanted me to feel. I always viewed them as the ones with the problem. Love is never wrong, and these bigoted dipshits were/are on the wrong side of history, I always have known.

It surprised me to learn over the years that other gay men haven’t had the same fortitude that I have had, that they haven’t been able to see, as I have been able to see, that while homophobia is shitty to have to endure, there’s nothing wrong with us non-heterosexuals. The fact that so many non-heterosexuals have internalized to some degree a belief that they are defective still surprises me at least somewhat.

Secondly, it long has been my impression that it’s much easier on today’s youth to be gay than it was back when I was young (I’m 42). I never contemplated suicide because of my sexual orientation, so it’s difficult for me to see why a young gay man of today* would go to the extreme of seriously contemplating suicide, unless, I suppose, his life were made a constant living hell by his tormentors.

The recent suicide of the 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, a student at Rutgers University in New Jersey, is perhaps the strangest, or at least the most publicized, of the recent suicides of young gay men. Clementi jumped to his death after his roommate, unbeknownst to Clementi, captured a same-sex sexual encounter of Clementi’s and aired it on the Internet.

That would be embarrassing to anyone of any sexual orientation, to have a sexual encounter of his or hers aired on the Internet (unless he or she were an exhibitionist…), but added to the blatant invasion of privacy in Clementi’s case was the stigma of homosexuality.

As embarrassing as it would have been to have had one’s sexual encounter publicized as it was in Clementi’s case, I still can’t see that  embarrassment warranting one’s own death, but very apparently his own death seemed to make sense to Clementi.

I imagine that Clementi’s roommate feels like absolute shit, assuming that he has anything like a conscience. While Clementi’s roommate undoubtedly is guilty of invasion of privacy, whether or not he committed a hate crime is debatable, and whether or not he is guilty of manslaughter or the like is even more debatable, although it seems to me that it was not entirely unforeseeable that to embarrass someone as much as Clementi must have been embarrassed might lead the embarrassed individual to suicidal ideation.

Still, although he apparently committed a heartless act, it’s important that we not crucify Clementi’s roommate, in my estimation. One suicide of a young man in the case has been more than enough.

In response to the recent suicides of young gay men, apparently, a YouTube channel called the “It Gets Better” project has been created, and features videos of non-heterosexuals telling their stories of how their problems related to their non-heterosexuality lessened over time. I surmise that it’s meant to encourage non-heterosexuals experiencing problems with homophobia to press on.

While that’s a good message, it seems to me that those of us non-heterosexuals who are struggling severely right now need to be reminded how fabulous we already are, whether the non-fabulous among us are able to recognize that or not, and regardless of how many non-fabulous individuals surround us. Indeed, we might be the only fabulous ones we know. But fabulousness is not about numbers. It’s not up for a vote. Fabulousness is about fabulousness.

So yeah, if you are fabulous and you keep the faith and you hang in there, it probably will get better as you learn to cope with being surrounded by so many who are so non-fabulous, but when you actually are contemplating suicide, perhaps promises that things will get better aren’t enough.

Those actively contemplating suicide aren’t thinking about the future so much as they are thinking about right now.

So again, it seems to me that what we need to do is to remind struggling non-heterosexuals how fabulous they already are — right now. Their first need is not promises of a brighter tomorrow, as accurate as those promises might be. Their first need is assistance in being able to see what they cannot see right now.

That happens best, I think, one on one. When we see someone struggling, that is an opportunity for us to help him or her to see the light that he or she cannot, at this moment, see. He or she might slap away our hand outstretched to offer him or her help — that’s always a risk when we extend ourselves to another — but he or she also might accept it.

And we need to continue to improve the social environment, such as with the “Make It Better” project, which is about making our schools safer and saner for our non-heterosexual students.

And never underestimate what perhaps is our best tool for combating homophobia (and racism, too): Never allowing a homophobic (or racist) word or deed to go unchallenged. Social pressure is a powerful tool of social change, and silence kills, because silence in the face of wrongdoing only feeds that wrongdoing, as wrongdoers unchallenged come to believe that they are doing no wrong.

And all of us, I think, are responsible for a social environment that allows so many individuals to be able to find suicide their only solution. Even those of us who don’t actively engage in homophobia, for instance, probably don’t do enough to combat it.

Suicide isn’t just an individual’s problem, but is our collective problem, and only when we work seriously to solve it collectively will we see suicides drop.

*When I was a high school student — indeed, even when I was a university student — openly having a boyfriend was not an option, unless I wanted to endure almost certain torment, and the plethora of gay-themed mainstream movies and television shows that exist today certainly didn’t exist back then. Non-heterosexuality is much more out of the closet these days than it was then.
