Comedian Wanda Sykes delivers a “constroversial” comedy routine at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night. She said nothing worse than what the stupid white male radio talk show hosts say over the public airwaves on their wingnutty shows every fucking day, but she is a black lesbian, and very apparently, different standards apply to her.
I watched video of Wanda Sykes’ “controversial” comedy routine at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night.
She did fine. She was not as funny as was Stephen Colbert at the dinner a few years ago, but that’s probably because it was fucking great to watch and listen to Colbert skewer George W. Bush while Bush was sitting right there — and to do so by ostensibly agreeing with Bush and everything that Bush stands for — and because President Obama is a much, much more popular and a much, much more competent president (and a president who actually was elected by a majority of the American people), and thus he is much harder to skewer.
The “controversy” over Sykes’ performance isn’t so much that she said anything that she shouldn’t have said — the wingnutty stupid white male talk-radio hosts say worse things on the air about women, about non-whites, about non-heterosexuals, about immigrants, about non-wingnuts, et. al., every fucking day — but it is that she’s a member of a historically oppressed minority group telling it like it is, and the stupid white male establishment (which is gasping its last gasps but is still gasping) has a real fucking problem with uppity black women, especially when they push back against the likes of Grand Dragon Rush Limbaugh. (Oh, yeah: And Sykes not only is black, but she is lesbian and she has been outspoken against the narrow passage in November of Proposition Hate — er, Prop 8 — here in California.)
Sykes’ most controversial joke at the correspondents’ dinner is the one in which she stated that wingnut ringleader Limbaugh, because he stated on air that he wants the Obama administration to fail, is a traitor (I agree) — and that because he’s a traitor, Sykes joked, “I think maybe Rush Limbaugh was the 20th [9/11] hijacker, but he was just so strung out on Oxycontin [that] he missed his flight.”
Sykes added that while he’s wishing for the Obama administration to fail, she wishes that Limbaugh’s kidneys would fail. (So do I.) Limbaugh needs a waterboarding, Sykes further added. (I agree; all proponents of waterboarding and other tactics of torture should give it/them a spin.)
White House mouthpiece Robert Gibbs intoned today, “I think there are a lot of topics that are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy. I think there’s no doubt 9/11 is part of that.”
Is Gibbs really that sanctimonious or is he just doing his job, as he sees it — to maintain “propriety” as it is deemed by the stupid white male establishment?
The Bush regime incessantly hit us over the head with 9/11 — which I long have suspected the Bush regime could have prevented but did not — for years.
I think that we, as a nation, deserve some laughs after all that the treasonous, unelected Bush regime put us through during eight long years of hell.
